The Americans Charles and Ray Eames were two of the most famous designers of the mid 20th century. They were voraciously curious about everyday objects from around the world, about materials, and about manufacturing processes. Their extraordinary skills ranged across industrial design, furniture design, graphics, photography, exhibition design and film. During World War II they designed a highly successful military splint, using moulded plywood. They applied this same technology to the famous Eames lounge chair, now one of the most famous pieces of 20th century furniture. They designed their own house - a landmark of 20th century design filled with found objects. Their film productions included the remarkable Powers of Ten in which an aerial image of a picnic is progressively enlarged by a factor of ten down to molecular structure, then progressively shrunk in scale to show the universe.
