Richard Haldane, 1st Viscount Haldane (1856 – 1928) was a Scottish lawyer, philosopher, influential Liberal and later Labour politician. He was Secretary of State for War between 1905 and 1912 during which time the "Haldane Reforms" of the British Army were implemented. He was instrumental in foundhing MI5, MI6, the Territorial Army, the British Expeditionary Force, and the Royal Air Force. Beyond his military contributions, Haldane contributed to the founding of Imperial College London and the London School of Economics.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
John Campbell (born 1947) is a prolific biographer, whose subjects have included Lloyd George, F.E.Smith, Aneurin Bevan, Edward Heath and Margaret Thatcher. He was educated at Charterhouse and the University of Edinburgh, where he obtained his PhD in politics.
