Toussaint Louverture (born 1743) was a Haitian general and played the leading part in the Haitian Revolution which took place between 1791 and 1804. It resulted in the declaration of the world’s first blck state.

Sudhir Hazareesingh (born 1961) is a British-Mauritian historian. He has since 1990 been a fellow and Tutor in Politics at Balliol College, Oxford. His work focuses on modern political history from 1850, with particular emphasis on the history of France from Napoleon to Charles de Gaulle. He is the son of Mauritian historian Kissoonsing Hazareesingh.
