the COLONIALIST: THE VISION OF CECIL RHODES (2025)
Cecil John Rhodes (1853 – 1902) was a British mining magnate and politician in southern Africa who served as Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896. He and his British South Africa Company founded the southern African territory of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe and Zambia), which the company named after him in 1895. He also devoted much effort to realising his vision of a Cape to Cairo Railway through British territory. Rhodes set up the Rhodes Scholarship, which is funded by his estate.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
William K. Storey is professor and chair of history at Millsaps College, a private residential college in Jackson, Mississippi. Storey teaches about southern African history, world history, and the history of the British Empire. He is the author of two monographs: Guns, Race, and Power in Colonial South Africa (Cambridge Univ. Press, 2008) and Science and Power in Colonial Mauritius (Univ. of Rochester Press, 1997).
